More About Thiksey Monastery
Thiksey Monastery is the largest gompa in Central Ladakh, situated at an altitude of 11,800 feet. Affiliated with the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the monastery is a 12-storey hierarchy of white-washed buildings perched dramatically on a hill slope. It is famously referred to as 'Mini Potala' due to its striking resemblance to the Dalai Lama's former residence in Tibet.
The most significant highlight is the Maitreya Temple, which houses a two-storey high statue of the Future Buddha. Attending the morning prayer (Puja) here is a transformative experience, where visitors can sit silently and absorb the meditative energy of the chants and the scent of traditional juniper incense.
