What To Expect?
A tranquil forest experience featuring a 3 km level walk from the Lakkarmandi gate to the Forest Rest House. You can expect to see a wide variety of flora including blue pine and deodar, spot wildlife such as barking deer, langurs, and birds like the Himalayan Monal. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Pir Panjal mountain range and snow-capped peaks.
Tips
- Carry a water bottle and some snacks, as there are very limited options once you enter the sanctuary.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes with a good grip for the forest trails.
- Carry a light sweater or jacket even in summer as the temperature inside the dense forest is lower than in town.
- If you plan to stay at the Forest Rest House, ensure you book through the Chamba Forest Department well in advance.
- Keep silence and do not feed wild animals to preserve the natural ecosystem.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is located between Dalhousie and Khajjiar. It is spread over 30.69 square kilometres and is a haven for nature lovers. The sanctuary is exceptionally well-known for its lush green trekking trails that are suitable for even beginner hikers.
The Forest Rest House at Kalatop offers a unique stay experience amidst the wild. Historically, the area was a favorite hunting ground for the Chamba rulers, but today it stands as a protected reserve for animals like the serow, leopard, and various species of pheasants.
