More About Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest in Kerala, covering an area of 344.44 sq. km. It is divided into two disconnected parts: the Muthanga Range in the east and the Tholpetty Range in the north. It connects the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, forming a crucial corridor for wildlife migration.
The sanctuary is rich in bio-diversity. Apart from being a primary habitat for elephants, it also houses tigers, panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs, and gaurs. The diverse flora includes valuable timber like Teak, Rosewood, and Bamboo, creating a lush canopy that remains green for most of the year.
