- Try to visit during or after the monsoon when the lake is full and the surrounding hills are green.
- Respect the local culture and avoid taking close-up photos of people bathing at the ghats without permission.
Exploring Lake Pichola
More About Lake Pichola
Lake Pichola was created in 1362 AD by a Banjara tribesman named Pichhu Banjara during the reign of Maharana Lakha. He built a dam to allow grain-laden bullock carts to cross the river. Maharana Udai Singh II was so enchanted by the lake that he chose its banks as the site for his new capital, Udaipur.
The lake has four islands: Jag Niwas (Taj Lake Palace), Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir, and Arsi Vilas. It remains the centerpiece of Udaipur's tourism, offering a backdrop for numerous Bollywood and Hollywood films, including James Bond’s 'Octopussy'.
How to reach Lake Pichola
Boats depart from Rameshwar Ghat, located at the end of the City Palace complex, or from the Gangaur Ghat in the old city. It is within walking distance from central heritage hotels.
