The Great Stupa (Stupa No. 1)sanchi
The Jewel of Sanchi

Overview
The oldest stone structure in India, originally commissioned by Emperor Ashoka. It is world-renowned for its four magnificently carved gateways (Toranas) that depict the life of Buddha.
What To Expect?
A profound sense of peace and architectural wonder. You will walk around the massive hemispherical dome, admire the 'Chhatra' (three-tiered umbrella symbolising high rank), and spend time studying the Jataka tales carved into the four gateways. The carvings show Buddha through symbols like footprints and the Bodhi tree, as he was not depicted in human form during that era.
Tips
- Visit early in the morning to catch the sun lighting up the Eastern Gateway.
- Wear socks as you will need to remove your shoes to walk on the higher stone terraces.
- Hire a certified guide to explain the complex stories depicted in the carvings.
- The site involves an uphill walk; consider hiring a battery-operated vehicle available at the base for elderly visitors.
- Visit the on-site museum to see the lion capital and ancient pottery found during excavations.

More About The Great Stupa
The Stupa was built to house the sacred relics of the Buddha. While the core was made of brick by Ashoka, the current stone encasing and the elaborate gateways were added by the Shunga and Satavahana dynasties. It is a masterpiece of early Buddhist symbolism.
The four gateways (Toranas) represent Love, Peace, Trust, and Courage. They are covered in intricate reliefs showing miracles performed by Buddha, his birth, and scenes from royal processions. The famous 'Yakshini' bracket figures on the gateways are considered some of the finest examples of early Indian female sculpture.
