More About Nanda Devi Temple
The Nanda Devi Temple is one of the most revered shrines in the Kumaon region. While the current structure was built by the Chand kings nearly 1,000 years ago, the worship of Nanda Devi (an incarnation of Parvati) in these hills dates back to ancient times.
The temple architecture is a fine example of the hill shikhara style. The most striking feature is the stone work on the 'Amalaka' (top stone) and the doorframes, which are etched with mythological figures. During the Nanda Devi Mela in September, the temple becomes the epicenter of a massive celebration involving folk dances, music, and a procession of the goddess.
