The gardens were conceptualized by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Diwan of Mysore, and were inspired by the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir. They were built alongside the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam between 1927 and 1932.
The garden is divided into the main garden, South Brindavan, North Brindavan, and Children’s Garden. It has served as a filming location for hundreds of Indian movies over several decades.

Located about 20 km from Mysore city. It is best reached by private taxi (45-minute drive) or by catching a KSRTC bus from the city bus stand.
