Exploring Konark Sun Temple
More About Konark Sun Temple
Built in 1250 CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, the temple was originally situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. Sailors once called it the 'Black Pagoda' because its dark magnetic roof was said to draw ships into the shore.
The temple is a masterpiece of symmetry and astronomical precision. Each wheel of the chariot is nearly 10 feet in diameter and features 8 thick spokes and 8 thin spokes, which can be used to tell the exact time of day by the shadow cast by the sun.
