Exploring Kandariya Mahadev Temple
More About Kandariya Mahadev Temple
Built around 1050 CE by Raja Dhandadeva, this temple is the largest in the Western Group. It stands on a massive high platform (Jagati) and features a series of halls (Mandapas) leading to the inner sanctum which houses a marble Shiva Linga.
The carvings here are a celebration of life. While famous for the erotic panels, the majority of the sculptures depict the daily life, warfare, dance, and spiritual aspirations of the Chandela period. The mathematical precision of the construction makes it one of the most stable and grand stone structures in the world.
