Exploring Buland Darwaza
More About Buland Darwaza
Buland Darwaza, or the 'Victory Gate', was built in 1601 A.D. by Akbar. It is an astounding example of Mughal engineering, combining red sandstone with white and black marble inlays. The gate is semi-octagonal in design and is topped by thirteen small domed kiosks.
One of the most famous aspects of the gate is the Persian inscription on the eastern archway which quotes Jesus: 'The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it.' It serves as a spiritual reminder of the fleeting nature of worldly power.
