More About The Great Cave
Cave 1, also called the Great Cave or the Shiva Cave, was constructed between the 5th and 8th centuries. It follows a mandala grid layout with multiple entrances that allow light to fall on the sacred statues at different times of the day.
The cave survived centuries of neglect and damage by Portuguese soldiers who reportedly used the statues for target practice. Despite the erosion, the remaining figures of Shiva-Parvati, Ardhanarishvara, and Ravana shaking Mount Kailash are masterpieces of ancient Indian sculpture.
How to reach The Great Cave (Cave 1)
After arriving at Elephanta Island by ferry, it is a short walk or toy train ride followed by an ascent of steps to reach the main entrance of Cave 1.
