Exploring Maheshmurti (Trimurti)
More About Maheshmurti
The Maheshmurti is considered the 'soul' of the Elephanta Caves. Carved out of a single wall of the cave, it shows Shiva with three heads, though some scholars believe there was a fourth head at the back that remains uncarved or hidden.
The sculpture is iconic not just for its size but for its artistic perfection. The central face is peaceful and meditative, representing the protector. To the left is a fierce face with a cobra, representing the destroyer, and to the right is a graceful face representing the creator.
