The Pinnacle of Buddhist Art

Overview
The most famous and well-preserved cave in Ajanta, known for its intricate carvings and the world-renowned paintings of Padmapani and Vajrapani.
What To Expect?
A mesmerizing encounter with ancient masterpiece frescoes. Look for the 'Bodhisattva Padmapani' painting, where Buddha holds a blue lotus. You will see detailed Jataka tales (stories of Buddha's past lives) covering almost every inch of the walls and ceiling. The use of natural pigments that have survived for nearly 2,000 years is a marvel of ancient chemistry.
Tips
- Photography is allowed, but strictly without flash to prevent the fading of ancient pigments.
- Wear socks; you will need to remove your shoes outside each cave, and the stone floor can get hot in the sun.
- Hire an MTDC authorized guide to understand the complex storytelling in the paintings.
- Carry a light flashlight (or phone torch) as the interiors are kept dimly lit for conservation.
Exploring Cave 1 (The Vihara)
More About Cave 1
Cave 1 is a royal monastery (Vihara) believed to have been commissioned by the Vakataka King Harishena in the 5th century CE. It is designed with a large central hall supported by 20 carved pillars and surrounded by cells for monks.
The paintings here were created using a technique called 'tempera'. The walls were first covered with a coat of clay and fermented grass, followed by a thin layer of lime. The artists then painted while the surface was dry, using pigments derived from crushed stones and minerals.

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Discover Ajanta through its silence—stand still in the Chaitya halls to hear the natural acoustics.
Use Public Transportation. Green eco-friendly buses take you from the parking lot to the cave entrance to reduce pollution near the frescoes.
Find a local festival. Visit during the Ellora-Ajanta International Festival (usually in Jan/Feb) for cultural performances by world-class artists.
