Dedicated to Lord Vitthala, an incarnation of Vishnu, this temple was built during the reign of King Devaraya II and expanded by Krishna Deva Raya. It is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and is the grandest of all temples in Hampi.
The 'Stone Chariot' is actually a shrine built in the form of a temple chariot. Legend says its wheels used to rotate. The Maha Mandapa (Grand Hall) features the famous musical pillars, designed to be played as musical instruments during royal ceremonies.
