A colossal 16th-century Portuguese fortification surrounded by the sea on three sides, featuring cannons, cathedrals, and lighthouse views.
What To Expect?
A massive stone structure with intricate carvings and a double moat. You can explore the bastions, the Panikota fort (visible in the distance), and the old jail. The view of the crashing waves from the ramparts is spectacular. The lighthouse at the end provides a panoramic view of the Diu town and the Arabian Sea.
Tips
- Carry water as it can get very hot walking along the ramparts.
- The fort is huge; wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Visit the nearby museum located inside St. Thomas Church.
Exploring Diu Fort
A Strategic Stronghold
Built in 1535 following a defense alliance between the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese, the fort is considered one of the seven wonders of Portuguese origin in the world.
It houses three churches: St. Paul’s, St. Thomas, and St. Francis of Assisi, each showcasing Baroque architecture.

Located at the eastern tip of Diu island. Accessible by auto-rickshaw or rented scooter from the town center.
