Yana is a quiet village tucked away in the Sahyadri mountain range of the Western Ghats. It is famous for its two massive monolithic rock outcrops created naturally from black karst limestone, standing as a stark contrast to the surrounding emerald-green foliage.
The taller peak, Bhairaveshwara Shikhara, stands at 390 feet, while the smaller Mohini Shikhara is 300 feet tall. The area is a biodiversity hotspot and a popular destination for trekkers who enjoy the relatively easy hike through the humid, rain-soaked jungle trail.
Mythology and Legends
The caves are deeply linked to the story of the demon Bhasmasura and Lord Vishnu's Mohini avatar. Legend says that Bhasmasura was turned to ashes here after being tricked by Mohini. The black color of the rocks is believed to be the soot from the demon's burnt body.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the cave temple during Maha Shivaratri to witness the 'abhisheka' performed by natural water droplets falling from the cave's roof onto the sacred Shiva Linga.
How to reach Yana
Yana is approximately 52 km from Gokarna and 25 km from Kumta. It is best reached by private taxi or rental bike. After reaching the base, visitors must undertake a 1.5 to 3 km walk to reach the rocks.
